Relay for Life and a BUSY week!

Last week end was super busy for me as well as very tiring. Put it this way...Thurs Night was the last time a had a proper night of sleep and from then to Sunday afternoon I had only 8hrs of sleep. Relay for Life is a 24hour event held to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society. People in teams walk laps around the track or in our case the gym.

(Above:Caitlin W's Mum with me and Sol at the Relay and Top Above:the word HOPE with the luminaria bags )

....Now Thurs night we stayed up pretty late decorating the gym Relay the next day. Thus I went to bed at 1am, skipped my morn class on Fri morn( don't worry...I didn't miss much...boring lit/English class.besides, I figured I needed as much sleep as I could get) and went over to the gym again in the afternoon to see whether they needed any more help. Since they didn't, we went back to the dorm and waited till 4pm to go back to the gym for the start of Relay. All my friends( Sol, Kathleen, Caitlin. N and Caitlin. W)were involved in this too so we made our own team. Our team was in charge of Luminaria( since we are part of the Colleges against Cancer club) and this is remembering those that lost their battle against cancer and those that survived. We had people purchase paper bags and write the names of their loved ones who fell into either group and then arranged the bags into the word 'HOPE' on the bleachers. We also put glow sticks in them so that when we shut off the lights the bags kinda glowed. It was really cool. we also did other stuff but its complicated to explain. Basically, we took turns in twos or threes walking around the gym cause someone from a team always has to walk laps. When you're not walking, there are games and other activities going on to participate in especially during the night and early morning hours. The activity I was in charge of was karaoke at 2am. Some of the other activities we had was Rock band, musical chairs, twister, root beer pong, ice cream eating contest, etc.It was REALLY FUN! Our team had this rubber duck float which we bought at the dollar store to go with the theme of Relay( Cruising for a cur...so its a cruise theme). We all took bets at the beginning of Relay to bet how many times the duck would go around the gym since we decided we would do laps with the duck around our waist. ( I won since I bet 749 and we did about 730 laps...but according to Caitlin she won cause sometimes we didn't go around with the duck....her bet was the only one higher than mine) I managed to stay awake the whole night until about 7.30 am on Sat. I couldn't take it any more so went back to the dorm to sleep till 9.30am and then went back to the Relay all the way till 4pm on Sat.

(Right: Me with the ducky)

After this, while everyone went to dinner and bed, Caitlin N and I had to go to Owen's house( a member of Vox Nova) for dinner then drove to Ashley's (another member of Vox Nova) dad's house for a sleepover since his house was closer to a church Vox Nova had to sing at early on Sunday morning. Being that only me and Caitlin were sleep deprived out of the rest of the choir, we couldn't really be wet blankets ( plus Ashley had a gorgeous Golden Retriever so of course I had to spend time with her:) )so we talked and had fun and only went to bed at 12 midnight. We were up again at around 6.15am to change and head over to the church for practice and service. It was a Lutheran church and the people were really really friendly! I wish Catholic churches were more like them. After the service, they gave us a barbecue lunch. Once we were we done there, we drove back to the school and reached about 1pm. I went straight to bed and slept through dinner and mass. I woke up about 8.30 pm, ate something and stayed awake long enough to do any homework that was due the next day and then went back to bed till Monday morning. So that was my TIRING weekend..

The week was pretty bad as well. I had papers left and right as well as tests to do cause we are nearing the end of the term. On Thurs and Fri I went to watch the school play. They were pretty good and the play was hilarious! This weekend we had an open house on Sat morn but other than that it was a much slower weekend that the previous one.

Bill Clinton sighting!

Hi!

I forgot to mention this... Last Thurs, Caitlin and I went to Penn State Altoona uni which is in Altoona (nearby town) to see Bill Clinton. He has been going around to some Unis to talk about the upcoming elections on behalf of his wife and other matters.
So both of us thought it would be great to just go and see an ex-President. We managed to get lost on the way there so by the time we arrived the gym, where he was speaking, was full. So we went to another building nearby to see him on the TV screen they had put up.What we didn't realise was that Bill Clinton's car was going to pass by and stop right by one of the windows of the building we were in. So we got a chance to see him get out of the car and wave at us before entering the Gym!! I took a picture...a bad one since the woman next to me was hogging the window...

Great experience..haha....

Many Happenings!!!

Hey all!

Great news! After going the application process and getting references and doing an interview(all before the Easter break) I got one of the RA position for next year! RA, aka Resident's Assistant, is a job basically where I'll be in charge of one of the dorms on campus. The pay is equivalent to the Room and Board of an entire school which comes to quite a bit...that's partially why I applied other than for the experience. In total, there are 9 RAs for all three dorms. I'm so excited and a little nervous to begin next year. It will mean cutting my stay in Singapore short so that I can come back for training before school begins but...its worth it:)

We had a combined Choir concert with the singers of St Francis university last Thurs(on campus) and today at St Francis University. It went OK...I really liked their chapel cause of its great acoustics. Yest(Sat), i went on a Honors trip with all the other Honors students to Ephrata which is about 3 hrs away by bus from school. Over there we we first stopped at '10 thousand villages' which is this shop/organization that buys handicrafts and goods from the poorest of the poor all over the world for a fair price and sells them in the US. They are part of the FAIR TRADE group ( if any of you have heard of it). FAIR TRADE is getting pretty big now days what with Fair trade coffee, fair trade goods, etc. They ensure that the people making the goods get paid fairly for what they made.
From there we went to a nearby Park to have a picnic lunch prepared by the professors...but most of us ended up going back to the bus to eat since it was a little cold and windy outside. Then we made are way to the cloisters, founded around the 1700s by a German, Beissel, where a group of brethren stayed along with a married congregation. This is how they lived...with my comments in bold...

"The members of the order were celibate. In addition to celibacy, the members believed in strict interpretation of the Bible, and self-discipline. Members were required to sleep on wooden benches 15 inches wide, with wooden blocks for pillows. They slept six hours per night, from 9 P.M. to midnight, and from 2 A.M. until 5 A.M., with a two-hour break to "watch" for the coming of Christ( Meaning they had a two hour long mass). They ate one small, vegetarian, meal a day. The only time the followers of Beissel were permitted to eat meat was during the celebration of communion when lamb was served( This was not very often). The members of the cloister spent much time at work (from 5am to 6pm with breaks in between for prayer. 6pm- 7pm was their meal and 7pm to 9pm was their lessons.choral or writing...whichever they could do)or praying privately. Services every Saturday were led by Beissel, often being several hours long."

When I heard this I was thinking..."they're MAD!" and I wasn't the only one judging by the expressions on the other people's faces. This group was later called the German seventh-day baptists.

My new laptop has been shipped here so I can collect it on Mon:D YEAH!!can't wait...will really need it for the next 2 weeks which are going to a killer since every paper is due about the same time! Why can't professors ever figure out that people take more than just their class...sheesh...
